As we walk through this passage of life, we come across different types of persons who voice their views, which impact our mind. Then our mind turns cheerless and confused with the impact of ‘rubbish ideas’ churned inside our brains. Darkness enters our understanding because of trapped ideas and mental clarity is distorted like the sunlight turning dim. Not because its power is weakened, but because of dark clouds blocking its rays.
Sometimes, trapped mind indulges in self-labelling such as, ‘I am useless’ or is locked in the greed of money or abnormal beliefs that some bad things may happen to me. For some ‘blocked’ minds, even misery is happiness because they experience intense pleasure from public sympathy.
We all get caught in the mind sometimes; and become its prisoners with erroneous thinking and negative and ‘unhelpful thoughts’. Mind-traps can destroy our decision-making and influence our actions, causing our mood towards others appear like anger, shyness and sadness. It can also put us in self-fulfilling prophecy by making us act in a way to make our thoughts to come true. Trapped mind can also cause, much stress, even to the wisest, brightest of mankind, making them, feel like a weakling to control any situation they face in life.
When our trapped mind pulls us towards negative ideas, it gives us things that we dislike. But when our soul controls our mind with positive thoughts, we enjoy positive results. If we do not come out from the wrong ideas in the mind, we end up with a diseased body, wounded heart, perplexed mind, a confused and neurotic spirit, leading to many diseases. Just as the one who wants to build his body needs to exercise, similarly, one whose brain is locked with damaging and destructive views should come out of it with helpful thoughts, for one’s soul and character to grow. We should leave everything in the hands of God like a chicken under the wings of its mother whom it trusts.
Our trapped mind should not wish for things which are unattainable. The poet, R W Emerson, explains in his poem, ‘Mountain and the Squirrel’. The squirrel tells the mountain — I think it no disgrace to occupy my place/ if I’m not as large as you,/You are not so small as I/…all is well and wisely put;/ If I cannot carry forests on my back, /neither can you crack a nut.’ Attainable, is what is within one’s reach and must be enjoyed without becoming neurotic to get unattainable and loose one’s health.
According to Thyagaraja, ‘You may have a good family life. You may have wealth, power and prestige, but, without that inner peace, happiness gets away from you.’ The everlasting happiness can be experienced only with God.
When brains are paralyzed or hypnotized with the planting of negative suggestions, one should defy negativism, with positive thinking and not dig the negative past and spoil the present. We need to pick the good from the past to enrich the present.
We should not get choked up with wrong ideas in the mind. “Either you control your Mind or your Mind controls you,” Napoleon Hill said. Your mind can be your blessings or curse. It shapes your personality and destiny.
