All the governments or politicians present and past are backing them with the false notion that they are locals, etc. But in fact all involved are locals – others giving cars on hire and so also many times using the taxis, who are exploited. The government has to end this game of non-fixing the meters by implementing the decision that every public vehicle – taxis or rickshaws should have meters. They can bargain for the maximum rate but have a meter and charging by the meter should be made compulsory. It is only then that everyone will feel that they are not cheated.
Give a fair level playing field for other operators also as in a free society there should be a competition as it will give the people cheap alternatives. Why should other operators be banned in a free society it should be survival of fittest to get the best for the people.
It has become a perennial tool – of striking and creating problems for the tourists in particular as locals can easily find alternatives. At present Tourism is a major industry in Goa on which many people earn their livelihood. This is threatened by the arrogant, abusive and exploitive taxi drivers. Many tourists have expressed that they do not feel like coming to Goa as well as recommending others to visit Goa because of the behavior of the taxi drivers. They seem to be emboldened by the backing of the politicians and the covert support of corrupt police force.
It is high time now for the Government to act and make it compulsory that all taxis will have meters within 3 to 4 months. They can ask for a reasonable rate to cover their return cost, etc. They should not be allowed to dictate the terms of not having competition from Kadamba buses or other forms of transport by other operators.
This has been kept for too long and it is bound to become a chronic disease if it is not cured at least now with an iron hand. Elections should not be the cause of delay but early action as the majority of the people will benefit from this and happily support those who act.
