The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 89 out of the 126 seats in the upcoming Assam assembly elections, leaving 37 seats for its alliance partners, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday.
Seat Sharing With Allies
According to Sarma, the BJP will allocate 26 seats to the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and 11 seats to the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF). The party, in power in Assam since 2016, is finalising its candidates ahead of the elections.

Sarma confirmed that the names of BJP candidates will be officially announced after the parliamentary board meeting scheduled for Wednesday. “The BJP election committee discussed both the candidate list and seat-sharing arrangements with our allies. The central parliamentary committee will meet on Wednesday evening, after which the list will be released either the same evening or Thursday morning,” he said.
Assam Election Dates
Voting for all 126 assembly seats in Assam is scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes to take place on May 4. Political observers are closely watching seat-sharing dynamics, as the BJP aims to retain power while maintaining strong alliances with AGP and BPF.
The seat-sharing arrangement reflects BJP’s strategy to balance its dominance with the influence of regional partners, ensuring a unified front for the assembly polls.
