A biting cold wave continues to sweep across Delhi and its neighbouring cities, offering little respite to residents already struggling with toxic air. After a brief improvement midweek, pollution levels worsened again early Thursday, pushing much of the capital back into hazardous territory.
Most monitoring stations across Delhi recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) readings between 350 and 400, placing conditions firmly in the ‘very poor’ category. Areas such as Wazirpur and Bawana witnessed a sharper decline, slipping once again into the ‘severe’ zone. The combination of plummeting temperatures, dense fog and stagnant air has further compounded the discomfort for commuters and vulnerable groups.

Delhi-NCR has been grappling with persistent pollution for nearly a month, with only marginal relief seen in the past few days. This slight improvement prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to lift GRAP Stage 3 restrictions on Wednesday evening. However, despite the withdrawal of curbs, the region’s overall air quality remains far from healthy, continuing to hover in the very poor range.
