What began as a desperate search for a missing wife has turned into a chilling alleged honour killing in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district.
For nearly two months, Gaurishankar Kumar searched for answers after his 19-year-old wife, Sujata Kumari, suddenly disappeared. While her family claimed to know nothing about her whereabouts, Gaurishankar remained convinced that something terrible had happened. He repeatedly appealed to police and posted emotional videos on social media, warning that he would end his life if those responsible for her disappearance were not brought to justice.

His persistence eventually led police to reopen the case and form a special investigation team. According to investigators, the probe uncovered evidence suggesting Sujata was allegedly murdered by members of her own family for marrying outside her caste.
The couple had been in a relationship since 2020 and eloped earlier this year before marrying in Samastipur. Their inter-caste marriage reportedly angered Sujata’s family. Although a kidnapping case was filed against Gaurishankar, Sujata later told a court that she was an adult and had married of her own free will.
After returning to her parental home around Holi, Sujata remained in touch with her husband until March 31. Following her disappearance, Gaurishankar intensified his campaign for answers.
Police allege that Sujata was strangled on May 8 and that her body was later burned near the Budhi Gandak river to destroy evidence. Investigators say several family members may have been involved. One suspect has been questioned, while efforts continue to arrest others linked to the case.
