The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed the immediate withdrawal of fruit-based beverages, ready-to-serve drinks, energy drinks, electrolyte beverages and similar products that continue to use the term “ORS” in their brand or product names. The order, issued on Wednesday, comes after the regulator observed that several companies were still selling such products in retail stores and on e-commerce platforms, despite earlier warnings.
FSSAI referred to its orders issued on October 14 and the clarification dated October 15, which clearly state that no food or beverage product—whether fruit-based, non-carbonated or ready-to-drink—is permitted to use the term “ORS” in any form, including as a prefix or suffix. The regulator maintains that such usage violates provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

However, the authority noted that many products continue to be marketed with “ORS” in their names, prompting renewed enforcement. FSSAI has now instructed its officers to conduct immediate inspections across retail outlets and online marketplaces to identify violators. Any product found using the prohibited term must be removed from sale, and strict regulatory action will follow against the companies involved.
Officials have also been asked to submit detailed action-taken reports, including inspection findings, violations detected and the status of product removal, to ensure full compliance with the directive.
