India’s military leadership entered a new chapter on Sunday as General N.S. Raja Subramani took charge as the country’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan. A highly decorated officer with over four decades of service, Gen. Subramani is expected to lead some of the most significant reforms in India’s defence structure.
Soon after assuming office, the new CDS outlined his priorities, highlighting military transformation, organisational reforms, and stronger integration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He emphasised the need to enhance tri-service synergy to ensure the armed forces remain prepared for future security challenges.

One of Gen. Subramani’s key responsibilities will be implementing the long-awaited theatreisation plan. The reform seeks to create integrated military commands that combine resources and capabilities across all three services, improving operational efficiency and joint warfare readiness.
The new CDS also stressed the importance of self-reliance in defence production. He pledged to accelerate the development, induction, and integration of indigenous weapon systems, aligning with India’s broader push for defence modernisation and domestic manufacturing.
Widely regarded as an expert on Pakistan and China, Gen. Subramani previously served as Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat and as Vice Chief of Army Staff. Throughout his career, he has held several key operational and strategic appointments.
Reassuring citizens, Gen. Subramani said the armed forces remain committed to protecting India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, pledging continued service with dedication, courage, honour, and professionalism.
