At least 200 individuals lost their lives as Israeli airstrikes targeted Gaza, effectively ending a fragile ceasefire that had been in place since January. The assaults, which occurred early Tuesday, impacted various locations including Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah, representing the most severe bombardment since the ceasefire commenced. Palestinian health officials indicated that a significant number of the deceased were children, as the strikes affected residential neighborhoods where thousands of people remain displaced.
During the course of these attacks, a spokesperson from the White House confirmed that Israel had sought consultation with the Trump administration prior to executing the strikes. In an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” program, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “The Trump administration and the White House were consulted by the Israelis regarding their actions in Gaza tonight.”

She stated that President Donald Trump had cautioned Hamas and other factions, including the Iran-supported Houthis, that they would “face consequences” for their acts of terrorism. The military strikes follow weeks of unsuccessful negotiations between Israel and Hamas regarding the status of the remaining 59 hostages still in Gaza. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of “consistently refusing to release our hostages,” despite mediation efforts facilitated by Egypt and Qatar, with support from the United States. In response, a Hamas official attributed the breakdown of the ceasefire to Israel’s unilateral actions and warned that the situation could deteriorate further. The truce, which was initially established on January 19, resulted in the release of 33 Israeli and five Thai hostages in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
Tensions escalated as Israel accused Hamas of delaying negotiations and obstructing aid deliveries to Gaza as a means of exerting pressure. In response, Hamas maintained that any agreement must entail a permanent cessation of hostilities and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza—conditions that Israel was not prepared to accept.
On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes targeted what the military identified as mid-level Hamas commanders and their infrastructure. However, Palestinian medics and witnesses reported extensive damage in civilian areas, including a building in Gaza City and residences in Deir al-Balah.
The full extent of the destruction is still being assessed, but the Palestinian Health Ministry has cautioned that Gaza’s already overwhelmed hospital system is struggling to cope with the influx of casualties.
The recent escalation comes after 15 months of conflict that commenced on October 7, 2023, when armed militants from Hamas attacked Israeli border communities, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 individuals, as reported by Israeli officials. In retaliation, Israel initiated an extensive military operation that has resulted in the deaths of over 48,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in Gaza. This campaign has severely damaged much of the region’s infrastructure and has displaced nearly the entire population of 2.3 million residents.
