The government has officially announced that the old mAadhaar app will soon be discontinued, marking a major shift in the way Aadhaar-related services will function on smartphones in the future. The decision is part of the Unique Identification Authority of India’s (UIDAI) larger effort to improve digital security, strengthen privacy controls, and offer users a more advanced and seamless verification experience.
In a post shared on X, Aadhaar’s official account informed users about the transition and encouraged them to switch to the newly launched Aadhaar app. The post stated, “mAadhaar will discontinue soon. Download the new Aadhaar App and experience faster access, smarter features & enjoy services at your fingertips. It is designed to make your Aadhaar experience simpler, and more convenient than ever.”
The newly introduced app is more than just a redesigned version of the older platform. It completely changes how Aadhaar authentication and identity sharing will work in everyday situations. Unlike the earlier app, which often displayed full Aadhaar details during verification, the new app focuses on privacy-first authentication methods.
Users will now be able to share only the required information through QR-code-based verification and secure digital sharing tools. The platform also includes face authentication support, allowing people to verify their identity without handing over physical copies of Aadhaar cards. UIDAI believes the new system will reduce misuse of personal information and make Aadhaar verification faster, safer, and more user-friendly.
The transition is expected to happen gradually, with users being advised to download the updated Aadhaar app before the older mAadhaar platform is permanently shut down.
