Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric known for his influence within Iran’s security establishment and extensive business networks linked to his father, had long been viewed as a leading contender for the position. His appointment came following a vote by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the powerful body of 88 clerics responsible for selecting the country’s Supreme Leader.

In an official statement released shortly after midnight in Tehran, the Assembly confirmed the decision.
“By a decisive vote, the Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement said.
The move is expected to reinforce the authority of conservative factions within Iran’s political and religious establishment at a time of heightened tensions in the region. The Supreme Leader holds the highest authority in Iran, overseeing the military, judiciary, and major state policies.
