A 24-year-old postgraduate dentistry student allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Antop Hill, with police stating that mental harassment by her boyfriend may have led to the tragic incident.
The deceased, Stuti Sonwane, was pursuing her Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). Police said a six-page suicide note was recovered from her room, in which she reportedly described emotional distress caused by her relationship with her boyfriend, Fuzail Mohammad Khan.
According to investigators, the note alleged that Khan frequently suspected her of infidelity and made hurtful remarks about her character, which eventually turned their relationship toxic.
Following the discovery of the note, police registered a case and arrested Khan on charges of abetment to suicide. He has been remanded to one-day police custody as the investigation continues.
Sonwane lived with her parents and sister in the Antop Hill area of Mumbai. On the day of the incident, when she did not come out of her room until around 11 am, her parents tried calling out to her but received no response.
Concerned, the family broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police said further investigation is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the contents of the suicide note.
