He moved through internal stairwells from a hotel room and reached a corridor near the ballroom area, where security forces confronted him. Gunfire was exchanged, and a Secret Service officer was struck but survived due to a bulletproof vest. Allen was overpowered and arrested at the scene. “My impression is he—he was a lone wolf, whack job. These are crazy people. These are crazy people, and they have to be dealt with,” Trump said of Cole Thomas Allen.
Investigators say Allen was arrested at the scene after allegedly advancing toward a security checkpoint during the event. He was reportedly carrying multiple firearms and knives at the time of the confrontation.
Authorities are also reviewing a document described as a manifesto, which Allen allegedly sent to a family member shortly before the attack. In the writings, he reportedly expressed intent to target officials linked to the Trump administration, stating that “all administration officials, not including Mr Patel…are targets,” prioritised from highest to lowest rank. He also allegedly wrote that Secret Service personnel would only be targeted if necessary and that non-security personnel, including guests and hotel staff, were not intended targets.
The writings further criticised security arrangements at the venue and included politically charged language directed at the administration. Officials have not verified all claims contained in the document, and investigators are treating it as part of a broader evidence review.
Authorities have also noted that the suspect’s communications and writings were sent to family members shortly before the incident, prompting concern and a police alert.
Ongoing investigation
Allen remains in custody and is expected to face federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and weapons-related offences. Additional charges may be added depending on the outcome of the investigation.
The FBI and Secret Service are continuing to examine his electronic devices, travel history, communications, and writings. Officials have emphasised that the investigation remains active and that no final conclusions have been made regarding motive or broader connections.
