The Man Behind the Trending Name

Mohammad Deepak is actually Deepak Kumar, a gym trainer by profession. He came into public focus following an incident on January 26, 2026, coinciding with India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations.

The controversy originated in Kotdwar when certain Hindu organisations raised objections to the name of a garment shop, Baba School Garments. They claimed that the term “Baba” is closely associated with Hindu religious traditions and should not be used by a Muslim shopkeeper. Some also linked the term to the revered Siddhabali Baba Hanuman temple located in the town.

The shop’s owner, Vakil Ahmed, however, rejected the allegations. He stated that his establishment has been operating for nearly three decades without any prior objections. Ahmed emphasised that the word “Baba” is commonly used across different communities and faiths, and should not be restricted to a single religion.

What began as a local naming dispute has now evolved into a broader national conversation on identity, religious coexistence and the meanings attached to everyday words in a diverse society.
