Will Joseph Vijay Become Tamil Nadu’s Next CM? Key Scenarios Explained

Actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay has delivered a strong debut in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single largest party in the state. As per the final numbers, TVK has won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) finished with 47 seats. The Indian National Congress (INC) managed 5 seats, and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) won 4 seats.

Despite falling short of the 118-seat majority mark, TVK’s performance marks a significant political shift, breaking the traditional dominance of DMK and ADMK in the state. Vijay’s party, contesting its first major election, has managed to capture a substantial voter base and position itself at the centre of government formation discussions.

What Are the Possibilities and Difficulties?

With 108 seats, TVK is just 10 seats short of a majority, making post-poll strategy crucial. The most immediate option is seeking support from smaller parties and independents to bridge the gap and stake claim to form the government.

Another scenario could involve outside support from parties like INC or PMK, which may prefer backing TVK over allowing rivals to take control. However, such arrangements often come with conditions and political bargaining.

On the other hand, opposition parties like DMK and ADMK could also explore alliance possibilities to prevent TVK from forming the government.

While Vijay is in a strong position, the road ahead involves complex negotiations, coalition management, and political strategy, which will ultimately decide whether he becomes Chief Minister.

Lack of Second-Rung Leadership: No Clear CM Face Beyond Vijay in TVK

Right now, that’s the weak spot—you won’t find many clear alternative CM faces in Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam beyond Joseph Vijay.

TVK is still a leader-centric party, built almost entirely around Vijay’s image, campaign, and voter connect. Unlike parties like Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which have multiple senior leaders, TVK doesn’t yet have widely recognised second-line faces.
