MARGAO: Police in Salcete taluka have intensified their drive against beggars causing nuisance to public and booked 10 cases in the last one-and-half months.
According to a police official, the State’s commercial capital is plagued with the menace of beggars, as most converge here. They are mostly seen in the town areas, outside shops in the markets, municipal gardens and railway stations. They are found moving openly in Margao and Fatorda areas in large numbers causing nuisance.

The increasing number of beggars has been a disturbing trend, however the menace is still under control, said a police officer.
The Margao and Fatorda police stations booked 41 and 24 cases respectively last year under the Goa Prevention of Begging Act. However, the drive continues.
Beggars arrested in these cases were produced before the courts.
However, police feel that these days, there may not be too many beggars operating in the Salcete taluka as most of them are seen frequenting the festivals.
