 MP stresses on students’ safety

PANJIM: North Goa MP Shripad Naik stated that the students’ safety and security should be the top priority in schools in State. He was speaking during the official handing over of teachings aids under MPLAD scheme such as LCD projector, photocopy machine, laptops and other items to Our Lady of Divar High School, recently. Mr Naik also promised to take up the construction work of the school compound wall under the scheme, which is the need of the hour.

Later, a small cultural programme was organized wherein an especially composed welcome song by the students of Vth and VIIth and trained by Sir Socorro Fernandes received applaud. A Goan folk dance and a Portuguese dance were also presented.

PTA chairman Eddy Picardo, Treasurer Elvis Aguiar, executive member Laximikant Pai and Dy Sarpanch of Goltim-Navelim Monica Aguiar were present.  Earlier, Principal Fr Ani Kumar welcomed the gathering. Teacher Savita Madkaikar compered while later Headmaster John Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.

Prayer meetings in city

PANJIM: Curry Blakes Team of John Lake Ministries, South Africa will conduct prayer meetings, seminars and workshops on March 12 and 13, at Goa Museum, behind Panjim bus stand, Patto, Panjim, between 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, says a press release.

NEET-2013, GCET series released

PANJIM: Rajhauns Vitaran, a leading publishing house in the field of education released its first book in the preparatory series NEET-2013 consisting of three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The book contains 20 practice paper sets of 180 questions each.

The current book in the series is thoroughly prepared keeping in view the guidelines given by the Medical Council of India based on the syllabus prescribed by the Goa Board of Education for Std XI and XII.

Books in preparatory series by Rajhauns are also available for GCET in three volumes namely Physics, chemistry and Maths. Each book contains about 40 practice papers of 75 questions each. NEET and GCET preparatory books from Rajhauns are prepared as per the prescribed guidelines. Both the series are available at the bookshops nearest to the students throughout Goa. NEET examination is scheduled for May 5.

‘Svotontr Gõyant Tiatrachi Udorgot’ 

PANJIM: On the occasion of Golden Jubilee of Goa’s Liberation, Tiatr Academy Goa will stage a special programme entitled ‘Svotontr Gõyant Tiatrachi Udorgot’. 

The cultural programme will highlight the development of tiatr during the 50 years of Goa’s Liberation. 

The presentation will be held on March 10, at 7pm at Vasco (St Andrews Church compound), on March 11, at 7pm at Kala Academy Panjim (Open Air Auditorium) and on March 12, at 3:30 pm, at Hanuman Theatre Mapusa.  The programme which is conceptualised and directed by Tomazinho Cardozo, features popular tiatrists besides award-winning artistes of Tomazinho Cardozo’s cultural troupe ‘Kala Mogi Candolim. 

The show will also feature winners of Kingfisher Voice of Goa and SOAD 3 International ~ Queeny Fernandes and Akash Telgu. The stage setting is by Timothy Dias, light effects and background music is by Vikas Chopdekar and the music is provided by Luis Cota. 

Alcoholism awareness programme 

PANJIM: An awareness programme on ‘Effects of Alcoholism on the family and the role of Al-Anon family groups’ will be held on March 10, at 10 am, at Grace Church hall, Margao.  Alcoholism is a disease which affects the drinker as well as his/her family, friends, co-workers ~ spiritually, mentally and physically.

Al-Anon family groups which include Alateen for younger members are an established community resource for people who have been affected by another’s use of alcohol. Al-Anon programme can aid the recovery process for the entire family through hope, faith, help, comfort and loving interchange among members having a common problem.

Sarpanch gets no-confidence motion

MAYEM: Five of the seven members of the Pissurlem panchayat have served a no-confidence motion against the sarpanch, Vijay Parab.

The panchas who have signed the notice are Devanand Parab, Sagun Wadkar, Nayan Gawade from the opposition and Deputy Sarpanch Vaibhavi Humane and Narendra Gawade from the ruling group.

Parab, who had taken over as sarpanch of Pissurlem on May 28, 2012, has been accused of failing to take panchas into confidence.

Bicholim sees four fires in 2 days

BICHOLIM: Four fire mishaps were reported in different parts of Bicholim taluka in the past two days.

On Thursday, a transformer near the Bicholim court caught fire due to a short circuit. On Friday, cashew saplings were destroyed in a fire at Vhalshim, Arvalem and Digne, elsewhere in Bicholim. 

Dy CM talks protection of women

BICHOLIM: Deputy Chief Minister Fransis D’Souza has stressed the need to make special efforts to protect women being harassed at home or in office. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Matrubhumi Mahila Sangh at Deendayal Bhavan hall, here on Friday. Expressing concern over the disproportionate sex ratio, D’Souza said the situation had arisen mainly due to female foeticide. 

Former Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar said that real development among women will take place only when they can live freely in society without any hindrance to their development. BMC Deputy Chairperson Narayan Betkikar and others were also present at the function.

Discourse on suffering

PANJIM: Counsellor and psychologist Fr Abraham SJ will deliver a discourse on ‘learning from suffering’ at Loyola High School, Margao, on March 10 at 4:30 pm and at Jesuit House, Panjim, on March 14 at 6 pm.
