Santa Cruz man meets watery grave
CALANGUTE: A 45-year-old man from Santa Cruz drowned, while his wife and another person were rescued by lifeguards at Sinquerim Beach near Aguada Fort on Thursday.

According to reports, a family from St Cruz had entered in a non-swim area at Sinquerim Beach. However, despite warning by the lifeguards to shift to a safe zone, the family continued to swim. Suddenly, three members got pulled seaward due to a rip current and were in distress. Lifeguards rushed towards the victims and managed to secure Mufid Khan (20) and Sadaf Khan (32). A water sports helper also rushed to the spot and held onto Sadaf’s husband, Yadeem Khan, who had drifted seawards, till the lifeguard reached the spot and brought the victim to the shore. On checking the victim’s vital, it was noticed that breath and pulse were absent on Yadeem and CPR was commenced, but no positive response was found. Yadeem was rushed to Candolim PHC, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Rider hurt in Kundaim mishap
PONDA: A motorcycle rider was injured after he was knocked down by a car at Manaswada-Kundaim. According to Ponda Police, the accident occurred on Wednesday when the car (GA-01-T-8700), which was proceeding from Ponda, knocked down the motorcycle (GA-05-H-3247) at Manaswada. Police further informed that the motorcycle rider, Dayanath Gupta, sustained injuries to his leg. Head Constable D V Sinari is investigating the case.
Cash, mobile phones stolen from shop
VALPOI: Cash, mobile phones and other items worth Rs 33,500 were stolen from a shop at Valpoi Bazaar. In his complaint, Abhay Datye told Valpoi Police that some persons entered his shop by removing the wall bricks and stole cash of Rs 20,000, two mobile phones and recharge vouchers, all worth Rs 33,500. MS plates, angles stolen at Sancoale
VASCO: MS plates and angles worth Rs 65,000 were stolen from an open yard at Zorint-Sancoale. According to Verna Police, Sunil Madgaonkar from New Vaddem, Vasco, complained that some persons stole MS plates and angles and Head Constable Remedes Gonsalves is investigating the case.
Netravali resident assaulted
SANGUEM: A resident of Netravali-Sanguem was injured after he was allegedly assaulted by a man at the Netravali Panchayat premises on Thursday. According to Sanguem Police, Vidhyadar G Dessai complained that the accused abused him and assaulted him. The complainant further stated that the accused also threatened him with dire consequences and fled with his scooter (GA-05-C-4118). Head Constable Uday Sawant is investigating the case.
2 held for theft at devasthan storeroom
PERNEM: Pernem Police arrested two persons on charges of stealing cash and other items from the storeroom of Ganga Devasthan, Mandrem. According to Pernem Police, Subhash V Assolkar from Madhlamaj-Mandrem complained that between 10 pm on March 20 and 8 am on March 21, Gautam Subodh Kumar from Orissa and Gaurish U Haldankar entered the Devasthan store room by break opening the door and decamped with two brass Samai, Nadadeep, amplifier, etc, and cash Rs 1,500. Pernem Police arrested both the accused and PSI V Chodankar is investigating the case.
Robber decamps with Rs 1.70 lakh
PORVORIM: A robber attacked the manager of a multipurpose cooperative society at Guirim-Sangolda and decamped with cash of Rs 1.70 lakh on Friday. According to Mapusa Police, Guirim-Sangolda Multipurpose Cooperative Society accountant Rajesh Karve complained that the robber entered their premises during the lunch break and decamped with cash of Rs 1.70 lakh after throwing chilli powder in the eyes of Manager Gopal Parab. Mapusa Police is investigating the case.
Fatorda resident succumbs to injuries
MARGAO: A resident of Fatorda who was undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College, Bambolim after he was knocked by a two-wheeler, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday. The deceased was knocked by a Honda Twister motorcycle near Pushpanjali Cooperative Society, Fatorda and had suffered injuries. The accident had taken place on March 20, at 12.30 noon when the motorcycle rider was proceeding from Arlem junction towards Fatorda.
Complaint over lewd messages
MARGAO: In a complaint to Colva police, Laximi Gonsalves, Corbott, Calata has alleged that Aleixo Arnaldo Pereira, Utorda transmitted derogatory lewd/vulgar messages on complainant’s cell phone between March 17-19. She also alleged that Pereira circulated them to his friends and also abused her with filthy language. Colva police have registered an offence under sections 504, 509 of IPC against the accused.
Brit’s bag snatched at Benaulim
MARGAO: There seems no let up in chain snatching incidents along Salcete coastal belt in recent times. March 21 saw a British national Thomas Fredrick Jones becoming the latest victim when two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched his bag while he was walking along the road at Benaulim. The bag contained electronic and other articles, besides cash of Rs 18,000. Jones in his complaint filed at Colva Police Station has stated that two motorcycle-borne accused approached him as he was walking and pulled his bag containing a Bluetooth head phone, two I-phones, pair of spectacles, sunglasses, book, Canon camera and Rs 18,000 and vanished in darkness. Colva police have registered offence under Sections 356, 379 read with 34 IPC against unknown accused and investigation is said to be in progress.
Pig carcass dumped at Benaulim
MARGAO: Waste dumping on the road leading to St John the Baptist Church, Benaulim has come back to haunt the local residents. Friday saw a sack containing pig carcass dumped along the road side, emitting foul odour in the locality. This is the second time in a fortnight that pig carcass has been dumped along the main road in blatant violation of Waste Management Rules. A local resident Warner Gomes told newsmen that he has drawn the attention of the village Sarpanch and the ward member to the nuisance caused in the locality and is awaiting action from the panchayat body. He lamented that the road has come in handy for unscrupulous people and waste dumping contractors for disposal of waste.
“The place where the pig carcass was dumped was not even 50 metres away from the Church. This nuisance should be stopped immediately”, he said.
In the past, local youth had caught owners of hotel and other establishments for disposing off their waste along the road. So far, the law enforcing agencies, including the Colva police, have failed to reign in on the miscreants.
Accused denied anticipatory bail
MARGAO: South Goa District and Sessions Judge Vijay Pol rejected the application for anticipatory bail moved by Conny Fernandes. Fearing arrest by the Nagpur Police, who have registered case of cheating against her and husband Raja Naidu, she had moved for anticipatory bail on the ground that she was suffering from illness and was not involved in the offence.
