PANJIM: Three fatal accidents killing five persons including two on-duty constables, in a span of less than 72 hours, has come as a wake up call for Goa Police.

The traffic police personnel have been deployed on a one-week drive from Monday evening to zero in on serious traffic violators such as drunken drivers. This also comes with a strict instructions to snub calls from ‘contacts’ who deter them from issuing challans for traffic violation.
Director General of Police I D Shukla has asked the traffic police units to crack down on drunken driving, rash and negligent driving and tripple riders.
While issuing challans, concerned inspectors are asked not to take calls or go by influence. Sources told Herald that any traffic police personnel, who finds a motorist in the wrong side of the traffic law, should avoid taking mobile phones from defaulters.
“While issuing challans, concerned inspector will not entertain any call. Act as per the law and no senior officer will make any calls to relax the fine,” an officer said quoting an extract of instructions.
The DGP has also asked the traffic team to collect data with the help of CCTV cameras to check for violations and accordingly dispatch challans to violators.
Traffic signals which are not in working conditions will also be activated without any further delay.
Three accidents in the last three days has sent shockwaves in the State with two constables killed by a car driver, purportedly in drunken state. A couple also lost their lives in a similar accident while a 22-year-old nurse too died in an accident.
