MARGAO: Three nominations were rejected today in Margao on the final day of scrutiny of nominations. An odd case of a person having certificates to prove that he is a member of two different castes both recognized as other backward communities has came to light.
In the four wards whose reservation for OBC was cancelled by the High Court altogether 18 nominations were accepted today. Six nominations were accepted for ward No 10 of Nuvem while three each were accepted for ward Nos. 3 and 5 of Betalbatim and six for Ward No 7 of Betalbatim.
Rufina fosy Pereira’s nomination for ward no. 8 of Curtorim was accepted and the objection raised by Akshata Laxman Korgaonkar that the caste certificate was not relevant was dismissed.
In Village Dramapur Sirlim the objection against Sebastiao Joao Salvador Pereira who had filed his nomination from ward No. 1 was upheld since he was the sopo collector for the panchayat.
The nomination of Maria Fernandes from ward No 6 of Orlim panchayat was also rejected because of her failure to produce the caste certificate till 5 pm. And so was Shreya Pandhari Bandari from ward No 3 of Aquem Baixo panchayat for the same reason.
In a queer case one Jesus Lourencinho Costa contesting from ward No 2 of Cavelossim was found to be having two certificates certifying him to be a member of the kharvi community as well as of the toddy tappers community and this was objected to.
However, the returning officer dismissed the objection on grounds that Jesus was proven to be an OBC and the validity of the caste he belongs to should be challenged before the proper authority which he was not and hence Jesus can contest the elections.
Incidentally Aida Joao Cardoso Fernandes is the only candidate from ward No 8 of Navelim panchayat.
