Chikungunya continues to haunt Goa with the addition of another 46 cases from October 16 to 22 taking the total number of cases since the beginning of the year to 532.
During this period 91 samples were tested out of which these 46 came out positive. Curchorem Primary Health Centre recorded eight cases followed by PHC Aldona (7), CHC Canacona (6), PHC Corlim (4), UHC Mapusa (4), PHC Sanquelim (3), UHC Margao (2), CHC Ponda (2), CHC Valpoi (2), PHC Cortalim (1), PHC Colvale (1), PHC Balli (1), PHC Marcaim (1), PHC Candolim (1), PHC Cortalim (1) and UHC Panjim (2).
According to the Directorate of Health Services the 532 cases recorded since January are out of 1,231 samples. It has now once again requested the general public to ensure there is no breeding in and around the houses.
The DHS mentioned citizens should further ensure small unused and unutilized containers, bottles, grinding stones, vases and discarded items like bottles, coconut shells, etc., are disposed properly to avoid stagnation of water.
It stated in spite of several requests and awareness programmes household items turn out to be major sources of breeding for malarial mosquitoes. Officials have warned the intermittent showers can create breeding sites, so people have to ensure they take utmost care.
