PANJIM: Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has once again begun its drive against the single use plastic carry bags and challaned six vendors with a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
CCP has been carrying out awareness against the use of single use plastic carry bags and the use of these bags has been banned. In March, through a special drive, the Corporation had pasted posters across the city including the municipal markets and spots around street vendors.
On Monday, CCP inspectors raided vendors and shopkeepers at KTC Panjim bus stand and the municipal market. During the plastic bags were seized and vendors issued challans for supplying plastic bags. Every vendor was issued a challan of Rs 5,000 each.
Earlier last month, former CCP Mayor Vithal Chopdekar had warned vendors against using plastic bags and also had threatened to action against those who in the garb of biodegradable bags supply fake bags to customers.
CCP Mayor Uday Madkaikar has taken cognizance of the massive use of plastic bags by the shopkeepers in the capital city and during the surprise raid on Monday, challans were issued and plastic carry bags and goods confiscated.
