curchorem: The Curchorem Police Station (PS) has been declared as the best police station among the other police stations in Goa by the Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Kumar Meena during the Goa Police Raising Day function held at Panjim recently.
“The survey team headed by Superintendent of Police (SP) of Crime branch Shobhit Saxena IPS visited the police station and collected the information including photographs and inspected the basic amenities provided to staff and the public, explained Curchorem Police Inspector (PI) Ravindra Dessai.
Earlier in 2015 and 2018, the Goa government had awarded third and second place respectively to this PS. In the year 2018, it was also recognized as the 10th best in India by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi in 2018.
Dessai added that the Curchorem PS was established soon after Goa Liberation in 1964 and housed in a small rented house at Bebquegal and then near the Ambedkar Circle, Curchorem before it was shifted into their existing building in 1979.
Recently the visitors lobby was beautifully renovated with a reception counter, water dispenser etc and prominent display of all essential information for the convenience of the public including details of the police officers.
As per the current records of the PS, the crime detection rate was 96% till December 20. From the registered 84 FIRs, 81 cases were detected; and one murder case which was reported this year has been solved. Around 14,334 cases registered under Minor Act have also been solved.
The PS was upgraded in 1999 and the then PI Tony Fernandes was appointed as its first full-fledged police inspector. The present staff strength of this PS is 67 including one PI, four police sub-inspectors including two lady sub-inspectors. The places from three talukas of Quepem, Sanguem and Dharbandora like Kalay, Kirlapal-Dabal, Part of Assolda, Xelvona-Oddar, Capxem, Cacora besides Sanvordem and Curchorem, with population strength of 56,500 as per the 2011 census that covers the area of 184 square kilometres, come under the jurisdiction of this PS.
For the purpose of better administration, the functioning has been divided into seven beats consisting of city beat, Kakoda, Xelvona, Sanvordem, Cormonem, Dabal and Kalay beat and one police outpost at Cacora Industrial Estate, which helps them detect and solve the cases on priority basis.
Congratulating the Curchorem police Power Minister and local MLA Nilesh Cabral said that the Curchorem police team led by PI Ravindra Dessai is doing hard work to maintain peace, law and order situation in the area. “They not only maintain good relations with people in general but with senior citizens too,” said Cabral.
Citizen Forum (SCF) President Rajender Fondekar added that Curchorem police are cooperating with them with great regard and humble way. “If any parent/s complains to them under the Maintenance Act they immediately act and interact with the children and get the matter solved at the earliest. They also visit aged parents house to house regularly to know their grievances and attend our functions in a very friendly manner and they also organised various programmes in our honour, ” said Fondekar.
Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council ex-Chairperson Balkrishna (Pinty) Hodarkar congratulated them and said that they deserved the award as they are doing a very good job in maintaining law and order situation in the area.
“They work to maintain public safety and peace in the area besides providing assistance in emergency and natural disaster situations.” said Hodarkar.
Curchorem Merchant Association President Rocha Pereira also congratulated and appreciated their functioning. “They entertain the public with respect and act immediately on their complaints and also do their job to protect lives and property particularly by conducting night patrolling,” said Pereira
Meanwhile, Appreciation certificates to all the staff, rolling trophy and cash prize of Rs.30,000 given to the police station which was received by PI Dessai.
