PANJIM: Major fish markets in the state wore a deserted look as trawler owners dominated markets, looking in many ways like enforcers and vendors too stayed away in support of a ‘no-fish sale’ hartal called to protest against the Rs 11 increase in diesel prices.
Retail diesel prices have gone up by 50 paise in contrast, irking the owners of the 1,000 plus trawlers who are camping in Delhi along with fishing societies from all over the country, except Karnataka.
Today morning, Panjim market only saw trawler owners as early as 8 am and the market precincts neat for a change. Only the side shops selling meat and chicken saw some business as even the local shoppers avoided the market.
With the striking fishermen still engaged in negotiations with the government in Delhi, a solution is nowhere in sight. It is likely that the strike will continue for a few days more. Society heads told media that the government had offered them a solution put up in the assembly earlier, but they did not take it up due to implementation problems.
According to them, the petrol tankers were not willing to directly fill the trawler tanks but would only fill barrels. Also billing was a problem along with the logistics of the whole exercise.
Given the present situation Goans may see a few more days without their favourite fish curry.
