AAP raises pollution bogey regarding Saligao waste treatment plant

AAP said that a visit to the plant revealed that most of the existing garbage, of the estimated 55,000 tonnes, that were supposed to be cleared still exists on site and it is now proposed to cover these, which would mean that moisture and heat would create more leachate and smell that would permeate the surrounding villages

PANJIM: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that the Saligao garbage treatment plant is causing environment pollution and creating problems for the population.
AAP said the contractor was unable to handle the rapidly deteriorating situation and accused the government of taking the people of Saligao and Goa for a ride by misleading them.
AAP said that a visit to the plant revealed that most of the existing garbage, of the estimated 55,000 tonnes, that were supposed to be cleared still exists on site and it is now proposed to cover these, which would mean that moisture and heat would create more leachate and smell that would permeate the surrounding villages.
The plant is now reportedly treating 130 tonnes a day and generates 40 tonnes as refuse derived fuel (RDF) for burning at cement plants.
AAP challenged the government, particularly the local MLA and Minister Jayesh Salgaocar and asked him how he proposed to take Goa forward without coming clean on the issue which has seriously compromised the ground water sources and water bodies thus making water unfit for consumption.
AAP said they may take legal recourse if the government refuses to shed light on the bluff played against the people of Goa by spending over Rs 200 crore on the plant and technology.
