An unusual security breach occurred at the Supreme Court on Monday when an elderly man attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai. The shoe did not reach the bench, and the man was quickly taken into custody. The Chief Justice, unfazed, reassured, “I am the last person to be affected by such things,” before continuing with the day’s hearings.
Witnesses reported the man shouted slogans about Sanatan before the incident. He was identified as Kishore Rakesh, who possessed a Supreme Court proximity card, allowing access to lawyers and clerks. Authorities are investigating his intentions.
Senior jurist Indira Jaising described the act as a serious casteist attack on the Supreme Court and demanded that legal action be taken. This incident follows prior criticism of CJI Gavai over his remark on a Lord Vishnu idol reconstruction PIL, which drew mixed reactions on social media. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and senior advocate Kapil Sibal commented on the disproportionate online response.
