PANJIM: The same cops
who for 11 days could not –
or did not – nab the assaulters
of Dr Inacio Fernandes
at the Anjuna gram sabha
were galvanised into action
after activists, including Dr
Inacio himself, knocked on
the doors of Director General
of Police (DGP) Alok
Kumar on Wednesday. The
result: the swift arrest of
two persons within 24
hours, including the politically
connected Gajanan
Tilve, who was seen raining
down blows on Dr Inacio
on video.
Speaking to O Heraldo,
Dr Inacio said, “This is a
people’s victory. I don’t
consider it as a personal
victory because I don’t have
a personal grudge against
Tilve. But people have agitated
against his assault on
me at the gram sabha and
not allowing me to speak.
I am grateful to the media
and to villagers, who spoke
up. The arrest happened
over a week, but the DGP
had said that he will take
strict action and the police
followed his orders.”
Apart from Tilve, Carlos
Fernandes, who was also
seen attacking Inacio, has
been arrested.
Following the incident on
November 24, Anjuna Police
had registered a complaint
and counter-complaint
from both sides, but
nothing had come out of
their probe. It was then
that the civil society members
decided to meet the
DGP on Wednesday, seeking
his intervention. They
pointed out to the senior
officer how the attackers
were roaming around freely
and even giving media
interviews.
