MARGAO, SEPT 11
The Chikungunya scare has hit Loutolim as agitated locals from Loutolim on Friday drove away migrant labourers employed in a cable laying work in the village.
Locals pointed out that they have no problem if the huge army of labourers work in the cable laying project, but are opposed to their accommodation in temporary shelter the village.
This evening, the local villages proceeded to the Verna Industrial Estate where the migrant labourers were taking shelter in the land earmarked for the 20-point programme. As news spread that the labourers are being housed on the land, the locals questions their presence and told the contractor to take the workers out of the village jurisdiction.
They pointed out that its the responsibility of the contractor to make available adequate housing arrangements for the migrant labourers, adding that they cannot be housed anywhere given the spurt in cases of Chikungunya and Malaria in Loutolim village.
When contacted, Loutolim Primary Health Centre Dr Soccoro Quadros informed that he and his team would visit the cable laying work and screen the labourers working at the site for any cases of Chikungunya.
