Protest over school timings and part-B salaries

MARGAO: Demanding that the government withdraw all the recent circulars and follow the old system of school timings prevailing in the State for the last four decades, the Salcete unit of All Goa Secondary School Teachers Association on Tuesday resolved to boycott all government functions on Teachers Day.
A large number of teachers, who attended the AGSSTA meeting in a city school here on Tuesday, in one voice supported the resolution to boycott the government functions on Teachers Day in protest against the extended school timings and government’s move to recover Part-B salaries.
After the meeting, AGSSTA president Dattatray Naik told the media that the Salcete unit of the association has adopted a unanimous resolution to boycott government-organised Teachers Day functions.
“The executive committee of the association will meet again to chalk out the future course of action, including staging morchas or other modes of agitation in support of the demands,” he said.
Naik pointed out that the recent circulars issued by the government on the school timings have only complicated matters for students, teachers and parents.
“These circulars are neither in the interest of students, teachers or parents. Neither the students reach home on time nor can they go for extra-curricular activities. We have resolved to ask the government to follow the old system of school timings. The five-day concept mooted by the government will only overstress the students.
“The system has been functioning well for the last 40 years. Let us work as per the system,” he said.
