BICHOLIM: Alert residents from Bicholim on Friday halted the unabated ore transportation through the town questioning as to how it has been allowed during the lockdown.

On Friday, the first day of the lockdown, the residents preferred to stay indoors. No shop was open except for some pharmacies. Despite lockdown, people were in for some rude shock when they found ore transportation in full swing.
Most residents uploaded videos of the traffic movement along the road and were surprised as to how the police were allowing them.
The trucks were plying from Amona to Sirsi and the entire stretch was covered with mud and sludge.
In one of the videos, a person questioned as to how this transportation has been allowed and accused the government of imposing the lockdown only for the benefit of the mining companies.
BMC’s former councillor Bhagwan Harmalkar halted the traffic near Shantadurga Circle in Bicholim.
“We don’t know what is happening. This lockdown is only to help the mining companies so that they can carry out ore transportation freely,” Harmalkar alleged.
“The entire road is muddy and everyone is complaining. We contacted the Police Inspector and the DySP, no action was taken by the police. So we were forced to halt the traffic,” he informed.
“When the government has imposed lockdown there is ore transportation on this road. Some of them also slipped and fell on this road. Now, when we halted the traffic and alerted the authorities, the fire brigade arrived and tried to wash away the sludge and mud from the road,” Youth Congress president Manoj Parab said and warned that if this continues then they will once again halt the traffic.
