Goa Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has said that taxi meters may not be required if taxi operators shift to an app-based service system, which could ensure transparency and fair pricing.
Godinho made the statement after holding a meeting with members of the United Taximen Association operating at Goa International Airport.

Clarifying the issue surrounding taxi meters, the minister said the proposal was not initiated by the state government but arose following directions from the Bombay High Court. He added that the government is currently exploring practical solutions that maintain transparency while also addressing the concerns of local taxi operators.
Speaking about the broader issue of overpricing in Goa, Godinho said the problem is not limited to taxi services alone. He pointed out that overpricing is also seen in several other sectors, including hotels, flight tickets and even certain restaurants.
The minister cautioned that such practices are harming Goa’s reputation as one of the world’s favourite tourist destinations. He stressed that overpricing must stop in order to protect the state’s tourism image and ensure a better experience for visitors.
