The earthquake killed thousands of people and injured many more, besides causing an unprecedented loss of property. He stated that the Church had always gone out of its way to help people affected by similar catastrophes in the past. Recalling the exhortation of St Paul, “Let love be genuine” (Rom. 12:9), he asked his faithful to once again respond to the challenge.
He further stated that Caritas India had already begun sending human and material resources to help the affected people after the Apostolic Vicar of Nepal – the country’s only Catholic Bishop – requested it to help Caritas Nepal with the mammoth rescue and relief operations.
The Archbishop, who is also the vice-president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India appealed to India’s Bishops to encourage Catholics and people of goodwill to express their support and make voluntary donations to the cause.
He requested the state’s religious institutions to share the contents of the circular during Sunday’s masses so that everyone could strengthen the Goa Church’s drive to bring relief to those suffering in Nepal.
