MARGAO: Leachate from the Sonsodo garbage dump yard has started flowing down into the storm water drains, even as a team of Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had a look at the site with the Margao civic body seeking renewal of the authorisation to run the waste treatment plant.
Thick black coloured water found its way into the drain outside the compound wall of the site despite the civic body awarding a contract to cover the site with tarpaulin sheet to prevent rain water from seeping into the existing waste.
While admitting that leachate has started flowing into the open drain, a Municipal official attributed the situation to the delay in covering the Sonsodo dump yard before the onset of monsoons. “Much water had seeped inside the waste dump when the site was not covered with tarpaulin. Since the dump yard is now covered, we will have to wait and see the results,” remarked the official.
Meanwhile, a team of GSPCB officials along with MMC Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar inspected the Sonsodo site this morning. The inspection was in connection with the request made by the civic body for renewal of the authorisation to run the waste treatment plant.
It is learnt that the GSPCB authorisation had expired in February last and the civic body has now applied for its renewal afresh. The GSPCB team is believed to have asked for certain documents, including the site plan.
