CANACONA: Clearing of huge trees standing tall as close to the road as the shoulder of NH66 between Karmalghat and Polem has been ordered by the office of Deputy Collector of Canacona. The order of April 11, has asked the highway authorities to undertake the cutting or trimming of exercise on top priority.
An inspection carried out on an earlier date by Forest Department, in association with PWD highways, Zonal Agricultural Office, Canacona and fire station had submitted a list of dangerous trees standing tall on the vicinity of NH66 road and posing imminent danger to the commuting community from Polem till Karmalghat in Canacona.
And on the basis of the recommendation of the report, the deputy collector ordered the removal and/or trimming of 69 trees some of which were beyond 20mts in height with huge canopies.
As the deputy collector also asked the PWD officials to undertake the job on topmost priority due to the impending monsoon season, the fire and emergency crew started implementing the order in right earnest and have already cut about 29 trees between Karmalghat and Bhatpal on Thursday evening. The whole exercise will end by next week, said a source at Canacona fire station.
Sources said that after executing the order a compliance report will be sent to the deputy collector’s office.
Diogo da Silva, a social activist, who is at the forefront in highlighting this issue, told this correspondent that finally most of the dangerous trees were being removed.
“As of present there are some trees which need trimming and some cutting so that each and everyone using this road reaches safely to their destination”, da Silva remarked.
