VASCO: A high-profile drama was witnessed at Vasco court on Monday afternoon after an alleged thief, Shirsa Rathod, who was released on bail ran away from the court premises to prevent a second arrest by Konkan Railway police.
“We arrested him on Saturday and booked a case under Sections 454, 457 and 380 of IPC. On Monday afternoon, we produced him before the JMFC to obtain remand. He was granted bail, so we took the bail order and left the accused in court itself,” said PSI Stanley Gomes from Verna police.
The drama started after Rathod who was bailed out and before he could come out of the court building, noticed Konkan Railway police staff waiting to arrest him. “We had booked Rathod in the past for a theft case and we wanted to interrogate him, so our team had gone to the court to arrest him. But, the moment he saw us waiting outside the court, he ran away and disappeared,” Konkan Railway PSI Uttam Naik said.
Though police have been making different claims, witnesses present said that after he was bailed out, Rathod met Naik at the main entrance of Vasco court and refused to surrender seeking explanations from the police as to why they wanted to arrest him. Witnesses also said that the argument between Rathod and the police continued for over 10 minutes after which Rathod left. Some claimed that Rathod jumped from the first floor and fled from the court premises.
