PANJIM: Raising serious concerns over the river pollution, the residents of Bardez have demanded the immediate scrapping of 244-room luxury hotel project within 100 metres of Assonora River.
Alleging that the company’s hotel project is a disaster, they have urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to intervene in the matter and stop the project immediately as the Assonora River is source of water for areas of Tivim, Aldona, Mapusa, Porvorim, Saligao and Siolim.
They alleged that government including Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) granted permission to the project despite knowing that the hotel would pollute the river by releasing sewage. They raised apprehensions that if the project is allowed to come up then the people of Bardez would be forced to drink ‘sewage’ water. They said the Assonora River has already been identified as polluted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State has initiated the rejuvenation process.
