BELGAUM: The Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) has urged Karnataka government to take up widening of the Belgaum-Goa National Highway and promote Belgaum for tourism development on a war footing.
BCCI members at a meeting on Thursday also raised serious concern over rising traffic along the NH4A between third railway gate and Peeranwadi, causing obstruction to vehicles proceeding from Goa to Belgaum and vice versa.
A memorandum, sent to District In-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi in this regard, also urged the authorities to promote Belgaum city and its surrounding which is blessed by abundant nature and many places as tourist interests.
BCCI has urged for overall infrastructural development of Belgaum and implementation of the Ring Road to promote tourism by way of better all weather road connectivity, sufficient rest rooms for tourists from Goa and branding of Belgaum in Goa and other states.
“It is high time authorities take up the issue of widening of NH4A and other roads that are putting Goans to inconvenience,” BCCI Secretary Umesh Sarnobat told Herald.
“Fearing traffic congestions, large number of Goans prefers not to come to Belgaum which is directly affecting the markets in Belgaum,” he added.
Chamber President Rajendrakumar Harkuni and other members too are serious regarding infrastructural developments that are hampering the overall growth of Belgaum. He said BCCI has urged authorities to maintain approaching roads from Goa on all season basis.
“Goans prominently contribute to the business and tourism of Belgaum district and state,” Harkuni emphasised. “Apart from widening the NH4 A, we have also urged government to widen the ever congested railway gates and roads in market area like the Kalmath Road, Ravivar Peth, Patil Galli, etc, that are frequented by Goans for shopping,” he added.
Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram who was present of the meeting was handed over the copy of the memorandum.
