PANJIM: With the aim of making Goa a ‘ragging free State’, the State Governor BV Wanchoo has called for continuous effort and vigilance to prevent ragging in educational institutions.
Wanchoo emphasized the need to enforce the Goa Prohibition of Ragging Act 2008, which provides legal and regulatory mechanism to deal with serious issues in the State. “The laws and mechanisms in existence should meticulously and carefully be implemented to curb ragging,” he said.
Governor was speaking during the State Level Anti-Ragging Monitoring Cell meeting held on Monday to take review of steps taken to prevent ragging in the State.
Wanchoo urged educational institutions to cooperate with the government in its effort to make Goa a ragging free state. “While ragging may not be a problem in our educational institutions in Goa now, but in past we have come across incidences of crime against students,” he said.
It would be the duty of all the educational institutions and other concerned authorities to ensure that our educational institutions at all levels remain free from any undesirable activity. This is our collective responsibility,” he added.
During the meeting, secretary Higher Education Faizi O Hashmi briefed the Governor on the various measures taken by the educational institutions and measures that are being taken to curb ragging.
Other government officers who attended the meeting included the vice-chancellor of the Goa University, heads of departments and higher educational institutions staff.
