MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council has finally granted license renewal for the construction of a housing project on the Costa ground at Aquem.
Chief Officer Deepali Naik said the request for the construction license renewal was granted as per the Council resolution dated July 2 last and after the builder paid the license renewal fees last week.
Sources in the Municipality informed that the builder paid around Rs three lakh as license renewal fees, besides cess.
Decks were cleared for the issuance of license renewal for the project on Costa ground after the Municipal Council on July 2 adopted a resolution by overwhelming majority of 18-2 votes in favour of the renewal. The Councillors voted for the resolution in favour of the license renewal fearing that the builder would file a case for damages and compensation against them.
That the Municipality would not review the decision became evident on July 15 when the Council at a special meeting confirmed the minutes of the July 2 ordinary meeting, finally paving the way for the granting license renewal for the project.
Residents of Aquem under the banner of Aquem Ground Bachao Association had been launching a campaign since the last two years against any project on Costa ground, calling upon the Municipality and the government to acquire the space for the benefit of Aquemkars and its future generations.
