MARGAO: Following the flooding of Tollebandh in Benaulim on Tuesday, the fishermen from Benaulim have warned that Navelim and Seraulim are also at risk given the filling up of water catchment areas after only a few days of rain.
On Tuesday, the low-lying areas not just in Benaulim but also in Navelim, Seraulim as well as Mungul and near the wholesale fish market were filled with water.
Fishermen led by Pele Fernandes added that these areas are getting filled during the low tide itself and that if the western bypass is built on embankments in Benaulim, the consequences will be catastrophic.
“The government doesn’t seem to be listening to the voices of the locals, the farmers, the fishermen and all those who have been protesting. Instead of spending money on projects including building a new hall at the Assembly, the government should divert those funds so that the bypass can be built on stilts,” said Pele.
Pele, who had accompanied the team of government officials on the boat ride across the submerged Tollebandh, said he stepped out of the boat and into the water and saw that the water had reached the height of his shoulders. He further warned against playing with nature.
