Bicholim mining workers warn govt

BICHOLIM: About 300 mining workers from Bicholim, who were served with retrenchment notice have warned the the government that they would not allow any mining operations to resume if they are rendered jobless.

Union leader Adv Ajay Prabhugaonkar said that a mining company from Bicholim has moved an application before the Union Labour Ministry for retrenching about 300 workers.

“The company today has served a notice of retrenchment. Today the government is celebrating 100 days of completion and here it is a big blow to the mining dependents,” Adv Prabhugaonkar said.

“Earlier with the announcement of forming Goa State Mineral Development Corporation, a positive message had gone to all but now with this retrenchment threat looming large, we don’t know what the Corporates and the government will achieve,” he said.

He also warned that if these workers lose their jobs then they will  not allow mining to restart. 

“If the government intends to employ contractual labourers or cheap manpower to restart mining, we will not allow this to happen. We willd also resort to jail bharo andolan if the workers are not providen jobs,” he stated.
