The Goa government has decided to introduce a bill aimed at preventing bhatkars (landlords) from selling land until the rights of mundkars are fully settled. The move is expected to bring major relief to mundkars who reside on landlords’ properties but are yet to be officially declared as such under the law. According to officials, the proposed legislation is likely to be tabled during the winter session of the Goa Legislative Assembly beginning January 12. At present, there are more than 2,000 mundkari cases pending across various courts in the state. The government believes the bill will help protect vulnerable residents from eviction or land transfers while their cases remain unresolved, ensuring legal safeguards until final adjudication of their rights.
