MARGAO: The Margao unit of the BJP on Monday slammed the Margao Municipal Council over its pre-monsoon works and demanded that the government headed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar should take cognizance of the carelessness on part of the Civic body and direct concerned officials to take necessary action.
Addressing media persons on Monday, BJP leaders Sharmad Raiturcar and Rupesh Mahatme set a month’s deadline for completion of de-silting of storm-water drains and threatened to take out a morcha if immediate measures were not taken.
Raiturcar said the people of Margao were furious over the complete failure of the MMC in performing their minimum expected duties, i.e. maintaining the cleanliness of gutters, clearing the clogged drains, thus ensuring free passage of rain water. “It is sad that 90 per cent of these gutters in areas of Malbhat, Comba, Sirvodem, Kharelem, Aquem are still untouched when the State has already experienced pre-monsoon showers and the monsoon is round the corner,” he lamented.
Rupesh Mahatme demanded to know the works carried out by the MMC by issuing two tenders worth Rs 9 lakh. “Whether the local Councilors were aware of any such works going on in their respective wards and whether the concerned junior engineers can identify the areas where these works are carried out,” he said, while expressing surprise why the civic body has asked government agencies to clean the gutters when the same work was allotted to a contractor. ‘There is failure on the pre-monsoon works front. The civic body should stop fooling the people and tell them why it has not engaged 50 daily wage workers when the same was cleared by the DMA in March,” Raiturcar asserted.
Arthur refutes charges
MARGAO: Refuting the charges levelled by BJP leaders over the pre-monsoon works, Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva said that neither the BJP nor any one has brought to his notice the incomplete pre-monsoon works in the city.
He further said that the MLAs of Margao and Fatorda, Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardessai, also haven’t complained over the pre-monsoon works undertaken by the civic body.
