PANJIM: The Bharatiya Janata Party will hold a civic reception to honor North Goa MP Shripad Naik for his “indispensable contribution” to politics till date, at Campal on October 18.
Speaking at a press conference to announce the felicitation Thursday, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj has been invited to felicitate Naik. The function will be on from 4.30 to 7.30pm.
The reception was originally scheduled for October 4, on Naik’s 60th birthday but it has been postponed due to a parliamentary board meeting in Delhi followed by week-long Legislative Assembly Session in the State.
“He (Naik) has been in politics for 30 to 35 years. His contribution to politics has been immense…” Parrikar said adding that the event is being held as a team involving BJP members and not as a political party.
To chalk out plans for the mega event, which will be attended by 108 members including ministers, legislators, industrialists and social workers; a Civic Reception Committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Parrikar himself. “The committee will meet on October 8,” the chief minister added.
An invitation has also been dispatched to prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi though his arrival is uncertain. “He is busy (with campaigning for Lok Sabha) at the moment. If his schedule permits, he will come,” Parrikar said while responding to a question.
