SANGUEM: A Black Panther reportedly attacked a calf on Saturday night at Darguinim, a remote hamlet in the mining belt of Sanguem.
A villager Gurudas Velip informed that at about 10 pm when they were about to go to sleep they heard their cattle making loud noises inside the shed.
Sensing something wrong, Gurudas and his other family members rushed to the cattle shed located adjacent to the residential house and were literally shocked to see a black panther running from the cattle shed.
Gurudas informed that since last about three months other animals were attacked in the village but they were not sure as to who was attacking their animals.
“However, on Saturday night, we saw with our own eyes the black panther running from the cow shed,” Velip said.
“Incidentally, when we entered into the cattle shed we found a calf to have been attacked by the panther on her neck. Due to the serious injuries on the neck, the calf died instantly,” Velip informed.
It is pertinent to note here that the Darguinim is located in the midst of the mining area at Tolem where there has been wanton destruction of forest over the years.
The village is also located within the precincts of Netravali Wild Life Sanctuary and close to the boundary of Karnataka State.
During the time when the mining activity was in full swing, the wild animals would not enter the village due to rampant mining activity and movement of trucks and heavy machinery in the village.
