Vasco: The recovery of boat owner Manjunath Harikant’s body from the Zuari River has sparked allegations of foul play, with members of the fishing community demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to Goa Fishing Owners Association President Philip Dsouza, Harikant had gone out for a fishing trip but failed to return home, raising concern among family members and fellow boat owners.
Dsouza stated that Harikant’s boat reached Kharwada Jetty late at night carrying fish, but the fishing nets were reportedly missing, leading to suspicion among members of the fishing community. Efforts to contact Harikant proved unsuccessful, prompting fellow boat owners to begin inquiries into his whereabouts.
Subsequently, a body found floating at sea was identified as that of Harikant, deepening concerns over the incident. The body was later recovered from the Zuari River.
Following the discovery, members of the fishing community alleged that Harikant may have been the victim of foul play and called for a comprehensive probe into the matter. However, these allegations have not been officially confirmed by investigating authorities.
A police complaint has been filed, and law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to Harikant’s death. Authorities are expected to examine all available evidence, including witness statements and forensic findings, before drawing any conclusions.
The fishing community has urged the police to conduct a fair and transparent investigation to establish the facts and provide justice to the deceased’s family.
