The Bombay High Court at Goa has directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to take a final decision in a decade-old cheating complaint involving ₹1.15 crore, setting a strict deadline of May 17, 2026.
The complaint was originally filed in 2015 by Munnalal Halwai before the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa. He alleged that an advocate had misled him into a property transaction linked to a petrol pump in Ponda, despite lacking legal ownership and facing court restrictions.
Due to delays in disposal, the matter was transferred to the BCI in 2018. Although evidence in the case was completed by 2022, the complainant claimed that no final order had been issued despite multiple follow-ups.
Taking serious note of the prolonged delay, the High Court has now mandated that the BCI conclude proceedings within the stipulated timeframe. The court has also scheduled the matter for compliance review on June 10, 2026.
The directive aims to ensure timely justice in a case that has remained unresolved for over a decade.
