CALANGUTE: Most of the main roads in and around Calangute are in bad shape and motorists have been struggling to negotiate the pot holes and other obstacles.
Pot holes have developed along the major roads, including the Nagoa-Arpora, Baga-Calangute and Candolim route. The main road leading to Saligao from Calangute near Little Flower of Jesus High School, and near the temple junction at Candolim also needs urgent attention.
“Major roads in Calangute and Arpora are full of potholes, which are the result of either underground cabling or road-widening work, but precautions should have been taken by authorities concerned not to damage the roads,” said Laurie Lopes.
“The work should have been completed before monsoon to avoid accidents due to pot holes which have damaged life and property,” added Lopes.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo admitted that the roads are in very bad state at few places.
“But since it’s raining heavily, the work will be taken up soon after monsoon with asphalting and soling done by September 2013, while the hot mixing of roads will be completed by November. The roads cannot be done now due to rains and heavy movement of vehicular traffic on the major roads,” said Lobo.
“The road leading to Nagoa-Arpora-Calangute-Baga is being widened through GSIDC with a provision for footpath all along the road up to Baga Bridge.
The work on retaining walls is being carried out in phases but the asphalting and soling will be taken up after monsoon. A footpath will be done from Nagoa five roads junction up to the Baga bridge,” added Lobo.
