Calangute sarpanch to meet sewage pumping station opponents

CALANGUTE: Calangute sarpanch Shawn Martins said that he would schedule a meeting with the residents opposing the setting up of the sewage pumping station in a residential area at Naikawaddo, Calangute as they had sought an appointment.
“We have received complaint letters from the locals objecting the setting up of this plant in a residential area due to sound and smell that will be emitted. I am yet to schedule a meeting with the complainant and the locals. They have asked me for an appointment to listen to them. I will give them a hearing and see what best can be done in the greater interest of the village. We will take a decision on it. I will fix a meeting for either Wednesday or next week,” Shawn informed.
Locals are objecting to the setting up of a sewage pumping station at Naikawaddo because it is in a residential area and they fear it will emit a foul odour. This pumping station is essential to complete the sewage network planned for Calangute. The panchayat was also under pressure to take this decision as the JICA funding will stop after May 31.
A member of Goencho Avaaz, Roshan Mathias said first of all this JICA work is upsetting because the acquisition was not done in the start and now they are trying to hurry through everything. “We are worried about the quality of this work if it is going to be done haphazardly due to lack of time. Already the roads are bad and after this it will be worst. Project cannot be done forcefully in a residential area,” said Roshan.
