CALANGUTE: Eight illegal structures comprising 20 rooms and six toilets were demolished by the Calangute panchayat at Porbawaddo, on Thursday.

Calangute Panchayat Secretary Arjun Velip said that the panchayat had taken cognisance of the structures a year ago after it was informed that sewage from the toilets was being released into the open.
“There was a major problem of garbage and sewage issues here as large number of people are residing in these rooms. Dengue and malaria cases were reported in the area,” Velip said.
Following a panchayat site inspection of the structures a year ago, it was found that these were constructed without any permissions from the relevant authorities, he said. “The panchayat adopted a resolution about a year ago to demolish the structures and after following due process, the demolition was carried out today,” he said.
“The structures were constructed with laterite walls and tin roof sheets. The area was in a complete mess as the owner not taken any steps for releasing sewage,” he said.
Velip said that the panchayat also initiated the demolition process against a large number of other illegal structures.
