CALANGUTE: The mad rush of tourists to the coastal villages of Calangute continued during the Carnival week. Many outstation vehicles, including heavy buses, were seen parked or plying the roads.
Tourists were also seen driving rented cars and jeeps in a dangerous manner, while a few were seen drinking and driving on the village roads. The traffic from Calangute market to Calangute beach moved at snail’s pace, as is always the case when tourists flock to the coastal belt of Calangute during events.
“We see so many vehicles from States like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat in Calangute, but we hardly get business from these tourists. The only people who will make good business are the liquor sellers as the tourists prefer to drink heavily while in Goa. One negative point is the drunken driving by these tourists on our roads,” said Lawrence, a local.
Another local stated, “Though illegal activities like prostitution are being clamped down, there is no end to such activities. Girls are still being exchanged for a price in the coastal belt of Calangute. Maybe this could be another reason for the mad rush of tourists to Goa, especially to Calangute, during weekends.”
